Blair, Pitt snap Georgetown's 29-game home winning streak

01/03/2009 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - DeJuan Blair scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, as third-ranked Pittsburgh pulled away in the second half and remained unbeaten with a 70-54 victory over No. 11 Georgetown at the Verizon Center.

Blair was coming off his worst game of the season, a foul-plagued, two-point, two-rebound effort on Wednesday against Rutgers. He eclipsed his point total in the first minute with two baskets to give Pittsburgh a 4-0 lead and the Panthers never trailed on the way to ending Georgetown's 29-game home winning streak.

Tyrell Biggs and Sam Young each scored 14 for Pittsburgh (14-0, 2-0 Big East), which was coming off a 78-72 win at Rutgers to start the conference season. The Panthers shot 47.1 percent on Saturday and held a dominant 48-23 rebounding advantage.

DaJuan Summers scored 22 points and Greg Monroe added 15 with eight rebounds for Georgetown (10-2, 1-1), which was trying to hand a conference foe its first loss for the second time this week. The Hoyas were coming off a 74-63 victory at second-ranked Connecticut on Monday, and Saturday's result halted a seven-game winning streak.

Georgetown hadn't lost since a 90-78 setback against Tennessee in November and suffered its first home loss since January 8, 2007.

The Hoyas trailed throughout the first half and came out of the break down 33-30, but finally tied it at 37-37 on a bucket by Austin Freeman. A three by Summers tied it again at 40-40 with 14 1/2 minutes remaining, but Pitt again took control.

Young converted consecutive layups and Levance Fields followed with the next four points to give the Panthers a 48-40 lead, igniting a 28-9 run that put the Hoyas away.

Biggs scored eight during the spurt and his bucket with just over three minutes remaining gave Pittsburgh a commanding 68-49 advantage.

The Hoyas never got closer than the final margin.

Georgetown opened Monday's game against UConn with a 15-1 burst and never trailed, but on Saturday quickly fell behind as Pittsburgh scored the first six points of the game.

The Panthers were ahead 11-5 before Summers started heating up. He canned a pair of three-pointers to fuel an 8-3 Hoya burst that made it a one-point game with just under 12 minutes left in the first half.

Brad Wanamaker answered with a three for Pittsburgh and the Panthers soon regained a five-point margin before Summers drilled another shot from beyond the arc to keep Georgetown close.

Pittsburgh again opened some breathing room with a 27-21 lead, but the Hoyas pulled to within one with a 5-0 run. A layup by Summers with 1:10 left drew Georgetown within 31-30 before a dunk by Gilbert Brown capped the opening half and sent the Panthers into the locker room with a three-point edge.

Summers scored 16 of Georgetown's 30 first-half points.

Michael Vick is back, Brett Favre isn't and the NFC East remains the best division in the NFC, maybe in all of football.

As players start to gather for the start of another season, some things change and some stay the same in the world of the NFL.

Bet 2010 Super Bowl Odds

The NFC East has been the dominant division in the National Conference for a while, despite limited playoff success, save for the New York Giants surprise Super Bowl win two seasons ago.

Hell, there's a generation of kids in Texas who have never seen the Cowboys win a playoff game (last win was in 1996).

But collectively, the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins (well, maybe not so much the Redskins) are as good as a division gets in an NFC conference that has struggled to stay competitive with the AFC side.

Sports bettors have both acknowledged the NFC East's dominance, as one glance at the NFL future odds menu will show.

Looking over the NFL betting odds at online sports book MySportsbook.com we see the top three teams listed to win the NFC Championship are all from the NFC East:

Dallas Cowboys - 7 - 1

Philadelphia Eagles - 13 - 2

New York Giants - 9 - 2

Slotting in behind these three are two teams from the NFC North: the Minnesota Vikings (15-2) and the Chicago Bears (10-1).

Again, despite the lack of recent playoff success, the Dallas Cowboys are popular with the sports betting community, as they hold 14% of all the money wagered on who will win the NFC Championship.

So far, the New York Giants are the bettors' favorite to represent their conference in the Super Bowl, as they have 24% of the overall NFC Championship betting volume.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? For the most part, the Eagles had a very productive offseason, the kind that could bring them back to the top.

They had a good draft adding the likes of WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy.

Unfortunately, the team received a blow when long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away on Tuesday.

But this team will make a real run at the division title this year. Going into the regular season, Philly is listed at +240 to win the division.

Last season the Eagles were 9-6-1 SU and 10-6 ATS.

Teams from the NFC East will play teams from the AFC West in the regular season and the Eagles haven't really been a good bet in the last 20 games against the likes of San Diego, Oakland, K.C. and Denver, only going 8-12 ATS.

Two seasons removed from that Super Bowl title, the New York Giants see themselves listed as the odds-on favorite in NFC East championship futures at +162.

Plaxico Burress is gone and with him all the bad publicity surrounding the gun in the sweatpants incident, but can they replace him in the offense?

Last season the Giants were a very reliable bet going 12-4 ATS.

In the Giants' last 20 games against fellow teams from the NFC East; they are 13-7 ATS.

Dallas is listed at +240 to win the division.

Dallas went 9-7 SU and 7-9 ATS last season and with the amount of talent the Cowboys have, a similar performance won't do.

The Cowboys have been atrocious against divisional rivals, going 6-14 ATS in their last 20.

The Washington Redskins are longshots to win the division at +550.
